Q: What is Neurofeedback? A: Neurofeedback is a form of Biofeedback in which the electrical activity of your brain is monitored by a machine, converted into audio or video signals, and fed back to you in real time. The Neurofeedback therapist is able to control the feedback to help you achieve the training goals you have set. As you, and your brain, observe how your brain works, you gradually, over time and with practice, learn to exert greater control over the process. Once the skill is learned, it is generally not forgotten. Q: How does Neurofeedback work? A: Much in the same way that exercise trains your body and physical therapy can help to remediate deficits, brain training can help you learn to regulate your arousal level, make your brain function more efficiently, and increase cognitive flexibility and stability. If you consider that emotions, physical symptoms, thoughts and actions and controlled or influenced by the brain, it is easy to see why brain training can be so helpful.
Q: Is Neurofeedback safe? A: Since Neurofeedback is a gradual learning process there are few, if any, reports of significant side effects. We are not aware of any negative side effects that could be considered long term. Initial effects usually pass within hours or by the next day. Sometimes, a client may feel tired, spacey, too revved up, have a headache or have difficulty sleeping the night after a session. Simple training adjustments easily manage these effects | Q: Is Neurofeedback a cure? Can it replace medication? A: Even though many physical and psychological difficulties may be helped by Neurofeedback, it is not a medical intervention and should not be considered a treatment or cure for any diagnosed condition. While some people have been able to decrease, or even eliminate, the medications they take, we view Neurofeedback as an adjunctive intervention, complementary to medical or psychological care. We are happy to consult with your providers as you progress through training. Q: How is Neurofeedback training done? A: Neurofeedback is a painless, non-invasive process in which sensors are applied to your scalp. We use either a paste, which is easily removed from the hair at the end of the session, or headgear with a mixture of normal saline solution and baby shampoo. The sensors pick up the miniscule electrical discharges that come through your skull and scalp. Those signals are then amplified and relayed to a computer where they are analyzed and used to run specially designed feedback software. The electricity involved, in addition to being very weak, runs only from your head to the equipment. No electricity is ever sent to your head. | | | | | | | | |
